patridge \'pat-rij\ n - Corrupted form of "partridge," an otherwise common word used to refer to any stout-bodied, variegated game bird; however, in the County, patridge refers specifically to Bonasa umbellus, or the ruffed grouse, common to the area's thick deciduous forests; "There's some lotta patridge out behind buddy's house." The male patridge has erectile black feathers which are lighter and less conspicuous in the female. See also: Irving bird.
